66 days to go before Brexit is a fact on January 1st 2021. Still, there are companies that have not yet started the preparations for Brexit. “We don’t know what the new situation will be like yet”, some say.
With the negotiations for a trade agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom still going on, that statement is true, but only partly so. Whatever the outcome of the negotiations, a few things are certain: there will be a border between the United Kingdom and the European Union, and there will be customs checks, customs documents, permits, and certifications that weren’t there before or need to be updated.
VNO NCW Warns: The Time to Prepare is Now
“The transition period ends on January 1st. That is when the guillotine will come down. The time to prepare is now, there are 9 weeks to go.”, Winand Quaedvlieg of VNO-NCW told reporters last week.

Sigrid Kaag, the Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs has written a letter to Dutch businesses last week urging them to prepare for the upcoming Brexit. The message is the same across the boards: whatever the exact outcome of the negotiations, prepare your business for new procedures and look closely at your operations and analyse what part of your business may be impacted.
